Even children below 18 years can get their own PAN card and many parents are shocked to know that. It’s no longer just for adults in the workplace. A PAN card in the child’s name is now required if you want to open a savings account or make mutual fund investments for them. Fortunately, the ordeal is easy and doesn’t have to involve stepping outside the home.

Why a Minor Needs a PAN Card

Referring to a PAN card as a formal proof of financial identity is perfectly appropriate. If money is being saved/invested under a child’s name – whether in banks, stocks, or mutual funds—a PAN is necessary. Without it, many formalities can’t move forward. It has become just as important as an Aadhaar card for completing financial tasks.

The Whole Procedure Can Be Completed Online

No need to go to any office or wait in long queues. The whole procedure can be completed digitally through the official NSDL portal. First, the “New PAN” option is to be chosen, then “Indian Citizen” and “Individual.” Then, the information of the child and the parent or guardian is entered with care.

Documents Required for Application

All the documents required should be ready in hand while starting the process. The primary use of a birth certificate is as proof of age. Aadhaar card or passport can also serve as an address and identity proof. Since the child is a minor, the parent or guardian’s documents should also be attached. All the documents must be scanned and uploaded properly while completing the online form.

Applying Is Quick and Easy

After filling the form, documents are uploaded, and a small application fee is paid online. The form is then validated after submission. After three days, an electronic version of the PAN card is delivered, and later the physical card is mailed by post.

When the Child Turns 18

Once the child grows up, a fresh PAN card can be obtained with their photo and signature. The PAN number is still the same, thus no need to change investment or bank records.

Offline Option Is Also Available

For people who reside in areas with low internet or electricity, the PAN card can also be obtained from the nearest PAN service center or government office.
In this age of virtuality, it is a simple and intelligent decision to get a PAN card for a child.
