Locals Guard the Ruins from Looters Amid Chaos
In the middle of this natural disaster people are facing another danger because some thieves are trying to take advantage of the situation. Locals who had their savings and gold in the lockers are now guarding the ruined bank building because they are afraid someone might steal what is left.
With floodwaters washing away homes and valuable items many people have seen strangers taking whatever they could find so the fear of theft is real and increasing.
Shattered Shutters Lost Ledgers and a Town in Panic
The flow of floodwater was so strong that one of the shutters of the bank got ripped off and the others have been badly bent. Inside the bank everything is under water and thick mud. The bank manager stood outside and tried to guess the total damage but even he could not enter the building.More than one hundred fifty shopkeepers from the main Thunag market had accounts here and used the bank daily but now their business has completely stopped and there is no idea when it will start again.
A Town’s Only Bank Reduced to Rubble
A local businessman named Hari Mohan said that for around eight thousand people living in this town this was the only bank and it had served the people for many years. From savings to loans everything was managed here but now nothing is left except broken walls and lost hopes.
The floods in Himachal in 2025 have not just destroyed buildings but also broken the financial backbone of small towns like Thunag and the road to recovery is going to be long and difficult.
