Ingredients for making Masoor dal with Saag:
- Masoor dal 1 cup
- Green saag (mustard, spinach or bathua) 2 cups (finely chopped)
- 1 medium onion (finely chopped)
- Tomato, 1 medium (chopped)
- Garlic cloves, 4-5 (chopped)
- Ginger, 1 inch (grated)
- Green chilies 1-2 (finely chopped)
- Turmeric Powder 1/2 tsp
- Coriander powder 1 tsp
- Cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp
- Asafoetida 1 pinch
- Salt to taste.
- Ghee or oil 1-2 tbsp
- Water as required
Method of making Masoor dal with Saag:
Wash Masoor dal and soak it for 15-20 minutes. Wash the saag well and chop it finely. Put masoor dal, turmeric, a little salt, and 2 cups of water in a pressure cooker. Cook till 2-3 whistles and let the cooker cool down. Heat oil or ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida in it. Then add onion, garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Fry till onions turn golden. Now add tomatoes and spices (coriander powder, red chili powder). Cook till tomatoes melt. Now add chopped greens to the tempering and cook for 5-7 minutes till it becomes a little soft. Then add cooked lentils and cook on low flame for 5-10 minutes. Adjust water and salt as per requirement. Serve masoor dal-saag with hot rice, roti, or millet roti. Adding a few drops of desi ghee on top doubles the taste. You can use spinach, bathua, fenugreek, or mustard greens—any of them. Rich in protein and iron, this dish is beneficial for both children and adults.
