A Glimpse of What’s Coming: Past Week’s Destruction
The city saw a frightening glimpse on Wednesday night Fortunately, a storm raged through with winds of up to 79 km/h. Trees were uprooted, electricity poles were so brittle they were matchsticks on impact and the city’s lifelines (roads, trains, and flights) yielded to nature’s fury. Traffic stopped, life went dead.
Lives Lost, Services Hit, and Flights Diverted
There were 7 fatalities in Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad. The area went through the ruthless might of nature from uprooted trees to ruined infrastructure. Palam winds howled at 72km/h and Safdarjung witnessed higher gusts. 11 flights diverted from Palam to Jaipur and 50 departures were held up. Trains, the Delhi-Howrah lines ran at just 30 km/h. Even the metro refused to budge, and Aqua Line services were suspended for 2 hours.

Sunday, May Bring Some Relief, But Stay Alert
The IMD has now issued a yellow warning for Sunday, which means some relief is in store, at least the storm will not be a complete asshole and will bring some light rain and strong winds. Keep indoors, charge your phones, and stay away from something unnecessary — because when the sky of Delhi goes dark, it is literally more than just weather. That’s a full-blown storm report.
