In Delhi, road repairs by the Public Works Department (PWD) start from mid-March and go to mid-June annually. This is not a calendar, they have carefully chosen this schedule to skip the monsoon – when roads cannot be worked on because everything turns into rivers. The pause, however, leads many chook owners to suffer as potholes and waterlogging issues are bound to get worse with the rains. PWD Minister Pravesh Verma had said that tackling these rooted problems will take time, but that the Delhi government has started working on upgrading infrastructure from day one of its taking over.

Post-Monsoon Plans: The Road to Better Streets

Minister Verma laid out a very clear road map for the next few months. The PWD will return to its second phase of road repair after the monsoon has gone. This time it will be on another 250 kilometers of roads identified as requiring immediate work The first is to massively decrease the everyday roads that people complain about being repaired. The government wants to deliver results and ensure smoother, safer streets.

PWD does not stop at roads only part of its initiative. There are progressive initiatives taking place in the water sector. The department has deployed water tankers with GPS into service to get and maintain data on the water supply. Add to that new borewells have also been set up to increase the availability of water in the city. This demonstrates the government has taken its promise of focusing on other important urban issues, other than just traffic and road maintenance.

PWD of Delhi is managing something around 1400kms of 60 feet of roads which were once under DMC(MCDS) now. It has dramatically increased the remit of PWD with this transfer. These repairs are needed for everyday use and safety because the poor road quality and unhealed potholes keep the local populace complaining.

Water logging is a second challenge that Delhi has to face. The traffic police have already categorized 445 major waterlogging spots throughout the city, out of which a mere 335 are with PWD. In an effort to address this, the city has been bifurcated into 35 cleaning zones wherein the activity is on the ground. The initial target date to finish this cleaning should have been May 31 but it was deferred due to delay and extended to June 15. To reduce the maximum monsoon disturbance and ensure the free flow of traffic this is a necessary step
