In a year when most expected scorching afternoons and dry winds, Chandigarh delivered something completely different. May, normally one of the hottest months in the city, ended up being a wet, cool chapter. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall in May was 191% higher than the monthly average, making it the second-wettest May in the past ten years.
June Begins with Showers and Cloudy Skies
Just as the city dried off its umbrellas, June stepped in with more clouds. Weather experts now believe the rainy spell is far from over. IMD’s long-range forecast shows that June will continue this cooler, wetter trend, thanks to back-to-back Western Disturbances. IMD Chandigarh director Surender Paul confirmed that these systems will stay active through early June and that the monsoon may arrive by the third week.

No Heatwave Days in Sight – A Rare Phenomenon
If the weather continues as predicted Chandigarh might pass through both May and June without a single day of heatwave conditions. That’s an extraordinary shift especially for a city where summer temperatures often cross 44°C. This year instead of baking under the sun, people are enjoying gentle winds, cloudy evenings, and much-needed rain.
India Weather Update: Heatwave in Delhi, Lucknow, Patna; Rainy Relief in Pune, Hyderabad, Goa
Next Few Days: Rain, Thunder, and Mild Temperatures
The forecast for the first week of June includes light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning likely especially around Tuesday when the current weather system is expected to peak. While Sunday saw a brief jump in temperature to 40.1°C, the rain kept the nights cooler, dropping the minimum to a refreshing 22.4°C nearly 4 degrees below average.
2025 Could Be One for the Weather History Books
With both heat and dust taking a backseat, 2025 may go down as one of Chandigarh’s most pleasant pre-monsoon seasons in recent memory. From umbrellas replacing sunscreen to breezy evenings replacing hot winds, this year’s summer story is unlike any the city has seen in a long time and it’s one that’s still unfolding.
