Recall the time you spent travelling because of the lengthy lines at toll plazas. After stopping their cars and standing in line, people had to manually pay the toll. Particularly during busy times or on holidays, it was annoying. Then came the game-changing FASTag. With just a glance, toll amounts were charged from your account, and you could pass through without any problem. Now, India will implement an even smarter toll system that will revolutionize the process of paying toll tax entirely.

Fastag System to Get Major Upgrade

FASTag eased and accelerated the process, but the government is eager to go one step ahead. There are plans to implement a new toll system. The plan is to ease collection of toll and identify it even more precisely. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has already started working on the advanced system, and it will minimize wait time and ambiguity even more.

Toll fees will be determined based on kilometers travelled

The surprise is that you will no longer pay a set rate at toll booths under the new toll system. The toll tax will depend on the kilometres your car travels on national highways. So, take shorter kilometres and pay less. The system will itself decide the distance and charge the linked bank account.

How the New Toll System Will Work

No stopping, no scanning. High-tech solutions are going to be used by the government for this update. FASTag will remain, but it will be used with something new – ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras. Your number plate will be scanned by these cameras and your distance travelled tracked. After that, your toll will be determined and deducted accordingly.

ANPR Cameras to Replace Manual Scanning

The majority of developed nations already use ANPR technology. It reads your number plate automatically without even stopping your car. This results in faster traffic and almost no human intervention. Such cameras will be present in every toll booth to keep track of cars smoothly.

When Will the New Toll Policy Start?

The launch date has not been given by the government. But it’s in the pipeline, and it’s going to roll out the system soon. So the next time you are driving, you may not need to slow down even for once, just drive, and the technology will auto-collect the tolls!
