Karisma Kapoor shares how she faced heartbreak after her breakup with Abhishek Bachchan and how her family helped her heal and move forward in life.
Bollywood’s Dream Couple That Wasn’t
In 2002 Karisma Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan shocked Bollywood when they called off their engagement just months after announcing it. They had been in a serious relationship for almost five years. Fans believed the two big film families were about to come together in a grand wedding so the news left everyone surprised.
Karisma Breaks Her Silence
In an emotional old interview with journalist Subhash K Jha Karisma opened up about the breakup. She called it one of the most traumatic times in her life. “The beginning of the year was traumatic. I would not wish it on any girl. I was forced to face the pain on my own” she said. She added that she was not emotionally ready to deal with the heartbreak. “Life deals you different cards and you just have to go with the shuffle” she said.
Her Family Was Her Strength
Karisma said her family helped her survive that dark time. Her parents Randhir and Babita her sister Kareena her grandmother Krishna Raj Kapoor her aunts Rima Jain and Ritu Nanda and her close friends were always there for her. “I would not have come out of that trauma without their support” she said. She also thanked the media for giving her space and not pushing her further.
Amitabh Bachchan’s Perspective
In 2005 Amitabh Bachchan spoke about the broken engagement on Koffee With Karan. He said “It was a sensitive moment. If the circumstances are not right for a relationship it is better to go separate ways.” He did not reveal more but it seemed the breakup happened due to family or timing issues and not because of something personal.
Where Life Took Them
Karisma married Delhi businessman Sunjay Kapur in 2003 but the marriage ended in a bitter public divorce in 2014. Abhishek later married Aishwarya Rai in 2007 and they had their daughter Aaradhya in 2011. They both moved on in life but their story is still remembered as one of Bollywood’s biggest what ifs.
