A Special Day in Bihar
In a moving gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi went to Siwan, Bihar, to hand over keys to new houses personally under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). It wasn’t an accomplishment in housing, it was the bequest of dignity, security, and belongingness. Try to imagine this sense of satisfaction: opening a door to one’s first home, knowing that it is yours.
More than 57 lakh families in Bihar have already received permanent homes through this initiative. In the nation altogether, the number already stands at over 4 crore. And look, this number is just going higher. Even PM Modi announced plans to build another 3 crore houses in the near future.
Not Just Houses—A Fresh Start
When the PM handed those keys to women, particularly sisters and mothers, it wasn’t a symbol, it was substantial. The new homes are largely in the names of women. It’s the first time in history for many of them to even be property owners. It’s not shelter; it’s safety, security, and self-worth all rolled into one.
If you’ve been dreaming of your own home but don’t know how to start, this scheme might be your golden ticket. PMAY is split into two categories:
