Why Only Half Parikrama of Shivling is Done: Know the Rule of Somasutra

Rule of Parikarma of Lord Shiva( Somasutra)

There is a rule of doing half parikrama of Lord Shiva, that is because the Somasutra of Shiva is not crossed. When a person does half parikrama, it is called Chandra karak parikrama. Shivling is considered to be Jyoti and the area around it is Chandra. You must have seen a Venus star above the half moon in the sky. This Shivling is not only its symbol but the entire universe is similar to Jyotirling.

Somasutra:

The Nirmali of Shivling is also called Somasutra. The scriptures order that Somasutra should not be violated during the Parikrama of Lord Shankar, otherwise it is considered a sin. While explaining Somasutra, it is told that the side from which the water offered to God falls, that is the place of Somasutra.

Why don’t cross Somasutra:

Somasutra has the source of energy, so while crossing it, the legs are spread and the flow of semen and internal air is adversely affected. This obstructs the flow of Devadatta and Dhananjay air, which has a bad effect on the body and mind. Hence, the scriptures order to circumambulate Shiva in a half-moon shape.

Then you can cross it: In other places in the scriptures, it is found that there is no sin in violating the Somsutra covered with grass, wood, leaf, stone, brick etc., but ‘Shivsyardh Pradakshina’ means that only half circumambulation of Shiva should be done.
