SBI IMPS New Rules 2025: If you have an account in the State Bank of India (SBI), then the new rules coming into effect from 15 August 2025 are important for you. Till now, sending money online through IMPS, i.e., Immediate Payment Service, was completely free, but SBI has decided to charge a small fee on large transactions. The relief is that online IMPS transfers up to ₹ 25,000 will not be affected.
Who will be charged and how much?
According to the new rule of SBI, this charge will be applicable for sending an amount above ₹ 25,000. ₹ 2 + GST will have to be paid on transfer of ₹ 25,000 to ₹ 1 lakh, ₹ 6 + GST from ₹ 1 lakh to ₹ 2 lakh and ₹ 10 + GST from ₹ 2 lakh to ₹ 5 lakh. This change is applicable only to IMPS transfers made through internet banking and mobile banking.
Which account holders will get a complete exemption?
The bank has clarified that this rule will not apply to certain salary package holders. Accounts like Defense Salary Package (DSP), Paramilitary Salary Package (PMSP), Indian Coast Guard Salary Package (ICGSP) of defense services, as well as CGSP, PSP, RSP, and SGSP package holders of government employees will be completely free from these charges. There will be no charge on many accounts, including the Shaurya Family Pension Account and the Corporate Salary Package (CSP) of pensioners.
Why is IMPS special?
IMPS is a facility of the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) that works 365 days, 24 hours. With this, money reaches the other person’s account immediately, whether it is a holiday or midnight. The ability to send up to Rs 5 lakh at a time and real-time processing make it very popular among customers.
What will be the impact on IMPS from the branch?
SBI said that the charges on IMPS transfers made from the bank branch will remain the same as before, which range from ₹ 2 to ₹ 20 + GST. The new change is only for digital transactions.
Impact of the change and advice for customers
This step has been taken to keep the cost of banking services balanced. By keeping small transactions completely free, the bank has given relief to crores of customers, while trying to maintain service quality by charging a nominal fee on large transactions. Customers are advised to check their account category and consider options like NEFT or RTGS before sending large amounts.
