Kamal Haasan’s bold replies
While promoting his forthcoming film Thug Life, veteran actor Kamal Haasan takes a leaf from his life and faith and states marriage is not the end-all of a good family background. While performing intense performances amid unapologetic views, veteran actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan makes headlines as effortlessly as he achieves the next big release in his career.
Thug Life will also feature a revelation into a life that very few consider for a star. On one such promotional event, Haasan was absent from the spotlight dragged in by none other than a question that many celebrities would shun:
Why did he marry twice?
The question was simple but also one that opened myriad doors into a deep conversation that reflected Haasan’s unconventional visions of tradition, religion, and, most significant of all, personal choices.
A Brahmin hailed from a respected family, Kamal didn’t shy away from mentioning both why these marriages dissolved and why societal expectations will not affect his lifegoals.
His co-star, Trisha Krishnan, was also asked during that event about marriage. To quote her with grace and clarity: “I don’t believe in marriage. If it happens, that is fine. If not, that is also okay.”
Her straightforward opinion on the subject set the pace for Kamal’s own response, which came with a story.
Kamal recalls an old conversation with his close friend, MP John Brittas, from some 10 to 15 years ago. Brittas asked him, “You belong to a good Brahmin family, don’t you?” Why did you marry twice?” Kamal, never one to dodge a question, replied,
“What does being from a good family have to do with getting married?” Brittas had then questioned him further, pointing out that Kamal worships Lord Ram and should ideally follow in his footsteps.
That is when the actor gave a response that stayed with many. “I worship no god and certainly don’t follow the path of Lord Ram. I follow my father-he had three wives,” Kamal said, unapologetically. It’s not the first time the actor has gone against traditional norms; this was just not the type of honesty that would have made most Indian audiences break out in applause.
Kamal Haasan got married to the classical dancer Vani Ganapathy for the first time in 1978. After about ten years of marriage, the couple got divorced. Then Kamal married Sarika an actress to whom he has two daughters.
But in 2002, both had made up their mind to part ways and went off to officially divorce in 2004. With Thug Life around the corner, Haasan, by now, doesn’t care what ill ‘critics’ have to say about him, living life the way he wants. His words leave much unsaid about himself, inspire conversations on freedom of choice, and the courage to go beyond unsupportive legacies.
Once again, Kamal Haasan shows he’s not just a film star—he’s someone who lives by his own rules and speaks his truth without fear. He is a storyteller, a rebel, and, above all, a man who stands up for who he is-once in a world where public figures often play safe.
