SBI issues a warning: Digital banking and online transactions have certainly made our lives easier, but cybercrime is also rapidly increasing. The country’s largest bank, State Bank of India (SBI), recently warned its customers to be vigilant against frauds masquerading as mobile number updates.
Frauds in the Name of Mobile Number Updates
Cyber criminals often send false messages to customers via calls, SMS, or emails, claiming that their mobile number is being removed from bank records or that a new number needs to be registered. They send a link or ask for OTP, ATM PIN, net banking details, etc. Once the customer shares this information, the fraudsters withdraw money from their account.
SBI Warning
SBI has clarified that the bank never asks for OTP or personal information for mobile number updates via phone, SMS, or email. If you receive such a message or call, consider it a fraud.
How Fraudsters Target Victims
Fake Calls and SMS: Fraudsters claim that an OTP is required to update your mobile number. They threaten that if you don’t provide the information, your old number will be blocked and your bank account access will be lost.
Use of Fake Links: Sometimes, they send fake links. Clicking on them steals your personal data.
Calls posing as SBI employees: Fraudsters pose as bank employees and ask for your ATM PIN, CVV, net banking password, or OTP. Once they obtain the information, they empty your account.
Ways to Avoid Fraud
Don’t Share Personal Information: Never share your ATM PIN, CVV, password, net banking user ID, or OTP with anyone. SBI or any bank never asks for such information.
Beware of Fake Links: Don’t click on any unknown links. Genuine bank SMS always have a clear sender ID, while fraudulent messages may have strange spellings or numbers.
Be alert to suspicious calls: If someone claiming to be an SBI employee asks for your OTP or PIN, disconnect the call. Immediately report it to 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in and inform the nearest SBI branch.
Update your mobile number only at your bank branch: If you need to change your number, go directly to an SBI branch. Do not update it through an online link or call.
If you become a victim of fraud
Immediately contact the bank’s helpline at 18001234 / 18002100. File a complaint online at the cybercrime helpline at 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in. The sooner you report, the greater the chance of securing your money.
