Strict Warning from the Centre
This extension arrived with some caveats. Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Food Supply, Jai Patil, has written a stern letter to every state administration. He stated unequivocally that a need is 100% e-KYC completion. Should states neglect to do this, they could lose their food grain subsidy, and their grain quota will be reduced.
To guarantee that the system contains no fraud or duplicate ration cards, the government is promoting e-KYC.
Why Palamu is Struggling
Although Palamu has made good progress, problems still exist. As of now, 92.40% of ration card holders have finished their e-KYC. Network issues and obsolete equipment present the challenge here, though. Many fair price stores still utilize 2G e-POS devices; slow internet means individuals must wait for hours only to complete one KYC.
Daily wage earners, who sometimes have to miss work and forfeit money while waiting, find this wait particularly difficult.
Lakhs Still Absent
Of the 19,36,699 beneficiaries associated with the National Food Security plan in Palamu, 13,94,362 have finished their e-KYC. That still leaves a staggering 5,42,337 persons aside.
This significant number of outstanding KYC changes—worrying even with several deadline extensions— If not finished quickly, these families risk losing access to subsidized food grains.
One deadline after another
The deadline has been pushed multiple times—starting from the original date of December 31, 2024, it was first extended to March 31 and then again to April 30. Still, full KYC coverage has not resulted even with these extensions.
By the end of March, just 68.56% of members and 90.70% of ration card holders had completed their e-KYC. That rose somewhat to 92.40% holders and 72% members by April 30. The countdown starts once more now that the last date has moved to June 30.
