During the landing at low altitude, there were sudden wind conditions on the ground resulting in the flight to cancel the landing and turn around. At those conditions the pilots felt that the condition was unsafe to land the aircraft so they cancelled the landing.

At Chennai Airport on Wednesday, a major crash was about to happen, but it was prevented by a timely decision of the Pilot. The aircraft was at 200 feet altitude before landing when  strong crosswinds forced the pilot to cancel the landing. The aircraft was carrying 180 passengers and was scheduled to land at 10:15 am. Due to the strong weather, the plane was circling around the area for around 30 min until it was in stable condition to land. This caused the delay in 30 min for the flight.

Airport Official information

As per the Airport authorities of India (AAI), the official reports confirmed that during the landing, the aircraft must come at a balanced position in order to do the safe landing. But in this case, the aircraft couldn’t get balanced due to the high speed and wrong alignment because of sudden change in the wind direction.

As per the official statement, ” The aircraft was flying at altitude of 200 feet low, when there was sudden change in the wind direction, making it unsafe to land for the pilot. A safe landing can only be done with controlled descent rate, precise alignment and at a particular speed with the runway. But during the landing for this flight, strong winds were tinting the flight which could have created a crash at the end, as it was at a dangerous angle before landing. Considering all these situations the pilot decided to go around and cancel the landing at scheduled time.”

Similar Incidents which occurred in Chennai till now

There have been multiple similar incidents for landing the aircraft at Chennai Airport over the last few years. This have raised some concerns about the overall infrastructure of the airport. In 2024, IndiGo flight coming from Jaipur faced the similar situation of “Touch and Go” at the airport. A flight coming from Mumbai in March 2025 suffered damage on the tail during the landing. Apart from this, there have been many other incidents which have happened there.
