A Web Series That Redefined Hindi Thrillers
Every once in a while, a show comes along that grabs your mind and refuses to let go. Asur did just that and more. This isn’t your usual detective drama with predictable plots and sugar-coated dialogues. Nope. It’s raw, disturbing, weirdly beautiful and unforgettable.
It began slowly when it was released in 2020 and lacked the usual OTT hype. But those who saw it early, they couldn’t stop talking. Soon, word spread. Because Asur isn’t just storytelling, it’s a spiral into the dark corners of human belief and madness.
It takes crime. Mixes in Hindu mythology. Adds deep psychology. What you get is something you haven’t seen before. Not on Indian screens, at least.
Arshad Warsi’s Powerful Web Debut
Who would’ve thought Arshad Warsi, the guy who made us laugh in Munna Bhai would make us shiver like this, In Asur, he’s deadly serious. He plays Dhananjay Rajpoot, a forensic expert chasing a killer who thinks he’s chosen by God.
Warsi is phenomenal. There’s pain behind his silence, chaos in his calm. He doesn’t shout to make a scene work—he stares, and that’s enough. That’s probably why he won the Dadasaheb Phalke Film Foundation Award in 2021 for this role.
26 Awards and Critical Praise
Let’s not beat around, Asur is critically adored. It holds a strong 8.5 rating on IMDb. And yes, it’s scooped up 26 awards. That’s no small thing in today’s OTT jungle.
Back in 2020, it bagged the Landmark OTT Special Award from the Indian Television Academy. In 2024, it was up for Best Series at the International Iconic Awards. It didn’t win that one, but just being there matters.
Star Cast and Streaming Details
Warsi doesn’t carry the show alone. Barun Sobti delivers a knockout performance. Anupria Goenka and Sharib Hashmi add real heart. Each episode is tight and exciting thanks to director Oni Sen.
Originally on Voot, it now streams on JioCinema. That means it’s just a click away.
