ATM charges increased from May 1, 2025: RBI raises fees to ₹23 after free limit. Check new bank-wise ATM transaction rates for SBI, HDFC, PNB, ICICI & more.

Cash Withdrawals Just Got Pricier—Here’s What You Need to Know

Starting May 1, 2025, withdrawing cash from ATMs will come with a steeper price tag. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revised ATM transaction fees, increasing the post-limit charge from ₹21 to ₹23 per transaction. If you’re someone who relies heavily on ATMs, this new rule could hit your wallet harder than before.

What Stays Free and What Doesn’t?

The RBI hasn’t tinkered with the free transaction limits, but it’s important to know where you stand. You still get:

5 free transactions per month at your own bank’s ATM

3 free transactions at other bank ATMs in metro cities

5 free transactions at other bank ATMs in non-metro areas

Once you cross these limits, get ready to pay up—charges differ by bank and city.

Bank-Wise Breakdown: What Each Major Bank Now Charges

HDFC Bank

HDFC has upped its fees to ₹23 + GST for every extra cash withdrawal after the free limit. At HDFC ATMs, only financial transactions are charged—non-financial ones like mini-statements or balance checks remain free. But at non-HDFC ATMs, even non-financial transactions will cost you.

Punjab National Bank (PNB)

At PNB ATMs, post-limit charges are ₹10 + tax. At other banks’ ATMs, it’s ₹23 + tax in metro areas and ₹11 + tax in non-metro cities. This update took effect on May 9, 2025.

IndusInd Bank

All IndusInd Bank account holders—including savings, salary, and NRI accounts—will now pay ₹23 per cash transaction beyond the free limit at non-IndusInd ATMs.

State Bank of India (SBI)

SBI revised its ATM policy earlier on February 1, 2025. If your average monthly balance (AMB) is over ₹1 lakh, you’re in the clear with unlimited free transactions. For balances between ₹25,000–₹1 lakh, you get 5 free at other bank ATMs. Post-limit, SBI charges ₹15 + GST at its own ATMs and ₹21 + GST at others.
