BS6 Phase-2 Explained : You might have heard the phrase “BS6 Phase-2” and thought, what on earth is that? Don’t worry, it’s not as complicated as it seems. This is all about cleaner cars and the planet. But it also affects how cars are manufactured, bought, and even driven. So let’s make it less mystifying.

What Is BS6 Phase-2?

BS6 means Bharat Stage 6, and it’s a government rule in India to regulate the level of pollution vehicles emit. It began in 2020 and was a titan move to completely cut out lethal emissions. And BS6 Phase-2 is phase 2, and it began from April 1, 2023. It’s tougher from that date onwards, particularly with petrol and diesel engines.

In Phase-2, the cars must be tested in actual on-road driving conditions for emissions. i.e., the cars are not only tested in the lab but even on the road under the guidance of a watchful machine named RDE (Real Driving Emissions). Aside from that, your vehicle onboard diagnostic system (OBD) has also been made to diagnose the engine and pollution control system condition more accurately.

What will it do to Your Car?

As you must be thinking about your current car, if you already own a BS6 car and you have purchased it before April 2023, don’t worry. The new regulation will not affect cars that are already in service and on the roads. But if you are purchasing a new car, it will come with a BS6 Phase-2 compliant engine. New engines not only will be cleaner and greener but will also be fuel-efficient.

But with the advancement in engine parts, sensors, and testing technologies, the cost of cars was raised to some extent. Some of the currently available models that did not reach such new heights were also phased out by companies.

What Are the Benefits

The greatest point in its favor is cleaner air. BS6 Phase-2 vehicles are cleaner, and that’s healthy for your body as well as the environment. BS6 Phase-2 vehicles also have superior technology, which keeps the engine healthy. It can even make your vehicle fuel-efficient in the long run.
