Burqa City vs Laapataa Ladies: Copycat or Coincidence?

Laapataa Ladies vs Burqa City: A Story of Two Movies and One Explosive Controversy

This is a real-life Life Plot Twist That is Stirring Up International Film Circles

Laapataa Ladies came into theatres as any other release with good reviews and social media praises and then a twist entry came, not on screen but in reality as well.

French Echo from the Yesteryears

French filmmaker Fabrice Brac, director of the short film Burqa City, sat flabbergasted after watching Laapataa Ladies. What unfolded before his eyes seemed oddly déjà vu.

He saw a kind hearted husband wandering from shop to shop, showing a photo of his veiled wife almost the same as in Burqa City. That identical scene was eerie enough to give chills down his spine.

“Such a pitch reminded me of my work, even before I saw the film. But it was after watching that it became clear that it was not just thematic but visual, emotional, and structural,” said Brac in an interview. From an abusive husband subplot to an intimidating police officer with sidekicks, according to Brac, Laapataa Ladies took a path already filmed by him.

Same Climax, Same Message?

What was truly shocking was the ending. The woman in both movies did not disappear accidentally but by choice, escaping from her poisonous marriage. “Even the moral of the story was very similar,” said Brac, adding that the heart of the film’s message was almost word for word.

The Indian Writer Responds: “100% Original”

The words of Biplab Goswami, writer of the film Laapataa Ladies are evident. He does not keep mum and in detailed posts on social media defended his work providing reasonable grounds. As per him the idea was registered as early as 2014 under a working title of Two Brides. He shared featuring documents of the Screenwriters Association besides other documents.

Goswami added, “Mistaken identity because of veils is an ancient literary trope. Shakespeare, Tagore, and Dumas have all made use of it. Our film represents years of cultural research, original storytelling, and a deeply rooted Indian context.”

Plagiarism or Parallel Thinking?

While the allegations were branded a priori by Goswami, “baseless and damaging,” making the team efforts an underdog, the world is yet to reach a conclusion. Coincidence, homage, accidental overlap, this discussion is still far from over.

One Story, Two Versions: The Debate Continues

As the controversy gains worldwide traction, one thing is clear: this is no longer merely a film-LAAPATAA is a drama storm of its own, taking truth, inspiration, and originality into the realms of contestation.

Time or perhaps legal clarity will decide the final act.
