Delhi Heatwave Break: Dust Storms, Rain, and Cooler Days Ahead

Delhi weather update: Expect dust storms, thunderclouds, light rain, and a much-needed drop in temperature. Here’s how Delhi’s heatwave will ease over the next six days.

A Dusty Twist in Delhi’s Summer Story

Delhiites, get ready for a dust storm, not a heatwave. The temperatures and weather are changing, winds blow at 40-60 km/hr and 35 degrees is recorded in the capital. Thunderclouds are heading our way, lightning is set to crisscross the skies, and there is a reasonable possibility that light showers will douse Delhi — with her environs receiving some well-deserved respite. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 42°C and 29°C, respectively good news here is— there will not be a heatwave this Friday, but a yellow alert still lingers in the air.

Next 6 Days: Summer Presses Pause

The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted a “cooler” summer for the next six days. The heat of the past few days is likely to ease, with the maximum temperature likely to be 37°C and the minimum to be lower at 26°C on June 18. For a city that has been broiled by highs of 44°C, this is a pleasant change.

Pollution Alert: AQI Still in the ‘Moderate’ Zone

Despite the dip in temperature, it’s the air quality that is still alarming. The AQI in Delhi was recorded at 195 on Thursday, classified as ‘moderate’ by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). All of which is perfectly lovely, until you consider the steadily climbing ozone levels that make the otherwise airy forecast worth a grain of salt for anybody breathing it in.

Delhi’s Hotspots: Where the Mercury Hit the Roof

And not all pockets of Delhi are yet feeling the cool down. The highest temperature, 45.2°C, was reported from Mungeshpur, Aya Nagar, the Ridge, with 44.2°C, was not far behind while the night minimum in Pitampura was a sweltering 33.5°C (one of the highest in the country), ensuring many a sleepless night for Delhi’s denizens.

Cooler Days Ahead, But Stay Alert

So, even as Delhi is finally able to breathe with the promise of thunderstorms and a cooler breeze, the yellow alert makes sure that we don’t yet pack away the water bottles and the umbrellas. Stay hydrated, stay safe and, maybe — just maybe — farsightedly, look ahead to a marginally better June.
