Classrooms to Control Rooms: IAF Drill Transforms Delhi Schools

Sixteen schools in Delhi have been made venues for a major exercise of the Indian Air Force. Thus bringing together educational spaces and national security operations.

Classrooms Reinvented as Defence Zones

In an extraordinary collaboration between education and defence these sixteen government schools in Delhi will be temporarily converted into operational bases for the Indian Air Force. Communication equipment necessary for the Delhi Integrated Air Defence Activation exercise from April 28 to May 2 is now installed within these school buildings.

Ministry of Defence Gives Nod

The initiative supported by the Ministry of Defence and executed through Delhi’s Directorate of Education allows these IAF teams to set up temporary configurations for testing purposes around air defence coordination. While operations like these are not new a few have been executed during national functions this one would remain purely tactical in nature.

The Indian Air Force has set up temporary equipment in the schools under this scheme. This has been done on the directive of the Ministry of Defence and the Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi. Similar kind of exercises had been conducted on national celebrations however this exercise is purely tactical in nature.

Official Order Confirming School Premises Usage

The last order came into effect on 28 April and stated that registration of admission or relatively temporary use was purely for the operational exercise of the Indian Air Force. Hence depending on the need certain school buildings under the jurisdiction of your Department are found suitable for temporary use. The selected schools have a strategic location providing logistic cover without compromising the academic process.
