Ingredients required for Dal Tadka:

Toor dal (pigeon pea)—1 cup

Turmeric powder—1/2 tsp

Salt—according to taste

Water—3 cups

Ghee or oil—1 tbsp

Ghee—2 tbsp

Cumin seeds—1 tsp

Asafoetida—1 pinch

Garlic—4-5 cloves (chopped)

Ginger—1 tsp (grated)

Green chili—1 (chopped)

Onion – 1 (finely chopped)

Tomato—1 (finely chopped)

Red chili powder—1/2 tsp

Garam masala—1/4 tsp

Coriander leaves—for garnishing

Method of making Dal Tadka :

Wash the tuar dal, add turmeric, salt, and water in a cooker, and cook for 3-4 whistles. After the pressure is released, mash the dal well. Take it. Heat ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida and let them crackle. Now add garlic, ginger, and green chilies and fry them till they turn light golden. Then add onions and fry till they turn pink. Add tomatoes and cook till they become soft. Pour the prepared tempering in the cooked dal and boil for 2-3 minutes. Garnish with green coriander. Serve hot dal tadka with rice, cumin rice, roti, or naan. Pouring ghee on top enhances the taste. For smoky flavor in the dal, you can add coal smoke in the tempering. And for taste, you can also add some dried methi.
