Among those feared dead is local filmmaker Mahesh Kalawadia whose disappearance has added a mysterious twist to the heartbreaking event.

Deadly Crash Moments After Takeoff
Flight AI171 a Boeing 787 departed from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39 p.m. on what was supposed to be a routine journey. Within minutes the plane plunged into the dining hall of the B.J. Medical College hostel in Meghaninagar where students were eating lunch. The impact caused a massive explosion killing 241 passengers and crew along with 29 people on the ground. Only one person on the flight survived.

Filmmaker’s Last Call Raises Questions
Mahesh Kalawadia also known as Mahesh Jirawala called his wife Hetal at 1:14 p.m. saying he had wrapped up a meeting near Law Garden and was heading home. However he never made it. When she couldn’t reach him again the police were alerted. His mobile phone was last tracked 700 metres from the crash site an unexpected location on his route home.

No Signs, No Answers Only Hope
Mahesh’s scooter and phone remain missing. The path traced by his phone does not match his usual commute raising serious concerns for his family. Hetal and relatives have since submitted DNA samples to help investigators identify any possible remains.
DNA Tests Become the Only Hope for Closure
With many bodies too damaged to be recognized visually DNA testing is the primary method of identification. So far 80 victims have been confirmed and 33 bodies have been returned to families. Authorities are working around the clock to complete identifications as families like Mahesh’s wait desperately for answers.

“This wasn’t the route he ever took,” Hetal said. “Something feels wrong. We just want closure.”
