Chandigarh 29 May 2025: The tragic event has weighed upon the seriousness of increasing cases in India, and thus North India has reported the first death caused by Covid in the year. A 40-year-old man came as a gardener from Ludhiana and originally hailed from Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh, passed away at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh.

Quick Deterioration of Health after the Onset of Breathing Problems
He had been experiencing fever, cough, and difficulty in breathing for three to four days when he first visited ESI Hospital in Ludhiana on 22nd May. His condition worsened very fast, and he was referred to Chandigarh on 26th May when his oxygen levels dropped.
Doctors at GMCH put him in the Covid ward on ventilator support. On 28th May, he was found to be Covid positive and sadly passed away in the early morning hours of the very next day. According to the doctors, he had no recent travel history and no initial symptoms of any new variant.

No Travel History- Hepatitis B History
A year ago, the patient had an episode of abdominal pain for which he was admitted into the hospital and during this time he was diagnosed with Hepatitis B. Since then, his health became delicate and such an individual is liable to get an infection of Covid.
Family Safe, Authorities Alert
The body was safely returned to Ludhiana, where it was cremated by the family, who are presently asymptomatic. In the meanwhile, the local health authority has kept officials on alert and are testing the people who came into close contact with him.

Is This a New Variant? Samples for Genomic Testing
Samples of the said patient have been sent for genomic surveillance to find if a new Covid variant, possibly JN.1, is in circulation. Meanwhile, the administration urges the public to maintain caution.
Experts Say
Dr. Suman Singh, Director of Health Services, Chandigarh, reminded all that crowded places should be avoided, masks to be worn wherever necessary, and good hygiene should be practiced. “Do not use self-medication if you feel unwell. Seek medical help immediately,” she said.
This being the eighth Covid death in India this year out of which the first was from North India is a wake-up call for all of us to stay alert. Covid is not over-and so should be our list of precautions.
