Every sport has its fun facts and myths. Some famous myths that have been busted now about the sport of football are given below. 

• Pele scored 1000 goals because there was no offside rule:

This is one of the most common myths when it comes to the sport of football. El Rey or The King Pele is regarded as one of if not the most prolific goal scorer in the sport. There is one common myth about his goal-scoring ability that completely tarnishes his reputation. This is the myth that Pele could only score a thousand goals because there was no offside rule back then. This myth is completely false, as Pele played most of his football between the 50s and 70s, and the offside rule in football was introduced way back in 1863. 

One peculiar fact about this myth is that the offside rule was even stricter when Pele played football!

•   Football Club, Spurs have never won a trophy:

Another popular myth among football fans is that the famous football club, Spurs, have never won a trophy. This myth is completely false as the last major trophy Spurs have won is the Carabao Cup (Previously known as Carling Cup) back in 2008. This myth about Tottenham Hotspur never winning a trophy is quite common among Gen Z, and only those people who have intensive knowledge about football know about this myth being false. Talking about their previous successes, Spurs were a dominant team way back in the 60s and even became the first English team in the world to win the UEFA Club Champions Cup (Now known as the Champions League) in 1963, which is a huge feat for the North London Club.

• India did not attend the FIFA World Cup in 1950 due to FIFA rejecting their demand to play without Shoes:

Another common myth that has been debunked in recent times by many football historians is that India did not attend the FIFA World Cup held in 1950 in Brazil as FIFA had denied their request to play barefoot. This myth has now been busted.

The true reason why India did not attend the World Cup is quite a peculiar one. It is said that the AIFF did not consider the World Cup as an important tournament and were focusing more on the Olympics. Another reason behind India’s absence from the tournament was the tiring journey to Brazil via a ship that would have taken the Indian Team about 4-6 weeks. 

• Arsenal has never gotten relegated:

Many Arsenal fans like to boast about the fact that their beloved club, Arsenal, has never gotten relegated and has always remained in the first division football leagues, but this fact is far from the truth. The Gunners, even though they are one of the clubs to spend the longest times in the top division football, have also gotten relegated once in the year of 1913. Their promotion back to the top division is quite a controversial topic as, after WW1, they were promoted back to top-flight football.

• Zinedine Zidane was never offside in his entire career:

Another famous myth among football enthusiasts is that Midfield Maestro and footballing great Zinedine Zidane has never been caught offside in his entire career. This myth is built completely around the greatness of Zidane and his footballing ability altogether, and it complements his personality on the pitch. But this myth is far from the truth, as even greats like Zidane have been caught offside. Many people have also posted proof in the form of old football clips that further confirm that even Zidane was caught offside!
