Orange Alert Issued: Storms, Rain & Dust , Across 11 Indian States

Weather Warnings Grip North and Northeast India.

The skies have started changing, and so shall the weather’s mood. On 2 June, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for 11 states on account of intense thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and dust storms. The warning is literally a heads up for millions across India that a change in nature’s temperament is going to come.

Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana Bracing Up for Fierce Thunderstorms.

In Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana, the mornings had a grey sky and cool wind to tell the tale of things to come. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds at times reaching 50 kmph shall prevail. Chance of lightning also prevails, raising concerns for safety during commute and outdoor activities. Delhi has been put under yellow alert today wherein temperatures are likely to hover between 35 to 37°C, offering some relief from the scathing summer heat.

Dust Storms to Sweep Through West Rajasthan

While the north prepares for rain, West Rajasthan is set for thick dust storms. Winds may roll down dry and fast, making travel perilous, with visibility almost negligible. So, if you were contemplating a road trip through Rajasthan today or on the morrow, better think again.

Rain Refuses to Let Up in the Northeast

In other words, continuous rainfall persists over Assam and its adjoining states of Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland. With the streets flooded already and low-lying areas of homes waterlogged, the best part it isn’t over yet. The IMD warns of continued rain over these areas for the next seven days, with very heavy showers possible in some of them by June 3.

Central India to See Moderate Rain and Stormy Weather

Light to moderate rains accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning are also likely over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and parts of Maharashtra. Changing wind direction spells caution for these areas even in the next 48 hours.

People Advisable to Stay Alert and Heed Warnings

With the atmosphere becoming unstable over such a vast stretch of the country, the IMD is urging people to keep abreast of the latest information. District-level warnings are already in force over cities like Saharanpur and Kurukshetra. Watch out for local weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel, and take shelter at the onset of storms.
