Chandigarh road condition worsens amidst monsoon – 13 locations saw the worst damage

As the monsoon hits, the condition of the roads gets worsened in Chandigarh. The damage is more severe than expected, and damage has been witnessed in roads, pavements, and boundary walls.

Other locations that are affected and are identified by the engineering department include sector 48A, sector 31, sector 49b, sector 47c, sector 33, sector 20/30 dividing road, sector 24, Mauli Jagran village, Sunder Nagar in Mauli Jagran, Dadu Majra colony, and village. Reason for failure:

  • Municipal officials pointed out underground utility failures from sewer lines to storm drains, causing surface-level collapses.
  • Years of deferred maintenance and budget constraints have made the city’s condition vulnerable and with no repairs done in the last two years.
  • Southern Chandigarh bore the brunt of damage, with engineering subdivisions reporting widespread failures. The UT Chief Secretary has conducted a high-level meeting to discuss the cause and to strategize a plan for infrastructure development and repairs. 
  • Barricades have been installed to avoid accidents but people residing are demanding swift and sustainable action.

Monsoon has just begun, and the condition worsens in Chandigarh if no repairs are done. Restorations measures :

  • Location  Sector 34 C

Reason: Rain led to wall damage – Debris cleared, wall needs to be repaired

  • Sector 49 B

Settlement due to damaged road gully, settled portion repaired, final repair to be done

  • Sector 47 C

Settlement due to the manhole of the sewer line damage – portion repaired final repair to be done.

  • Sector 48 A 

Settlement due to manhole sewer line damage, final repairs pending

  • Mauli Jagran village

Due to flooding, protection has been made

  • Sunder Nagar, Mauli Jagran

The boundary wall is damaged, and will be constructed soon

  • Industrial Area Phase 1

The damaged boundary wall will be constructed

  • Roundabout sector 31/32/46/47
    The road was broken due to a storm line; restoration will be done after repair if the line
  • Roundabout sector 32/33/45/46

Road settled due to damage to the storm chamber, restoration work to be carried out after repair of the line

  • Roundabout sector 20/30

Road caved in due to broken storm line, temporary barricading to avoid mishaps, restoration will be done after repairing work

  • Sector 24 C

Road settled due to damage of storm pipeline, final repairs will be accommodated after line repairs.

Road caved in near manhole chamber, final repair to be done after manhole work

  • Dadumajra village

Road settled due to sewerage line, final repairs to be done after sewerage line work.
