Fluctuation in gold and silver prices: Ahead of US Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s speech in Jackson Hole today, gold prices fell in early trade on Friday, August 22, in the domestic futures market. At 10:05 am, gold’s October 3 delivery contract on MCX was trading at ₹ 99,330 per 10 grams with a weakness of 0.11%. At the same time, silver’s September 5 delivery contract was trading at ₹ 1,13,725 per kg with a slight increase of 0.02%.
Gold and silver returns of the last 20 years
Gold has always been a safe option for investors. From ₹ 7,638 per 10 grams in 2005, it has crossed ₹ 1 lakh in 2025 (till June). That is, it has increased tremendously by about 1,200% in the last two decades. In the last 20 years, gold has given positive returns for 16 years. This year so far (YTD) it has increased by 31%, making it one of the top-performing assets of 2025.
At the same time, silver has also not disappointed investors. Its prices have increased by about 668% in the last two decades (2005-2025). At present, its rate remains above ₹ 1 lakh per kg.
Price released by IBA on 22 August
According to the Indian Bullion Association (IBA), on August 22 at 10:05 am, the price of 24 carat gold was ₹ 99,530 per 10 grams, and the rate of 22 carat gold was ₹ 91,236 per 10 grams. At the same time, the price of silver (999 fine) was recorded at ₹ 1,14,240 per kg. Keep in mind, retail buyers have to pay making charges, taxes and GST separately, which can increase the final price.
