Heavy Rain in Mumbai, Showers in Delhi: IMD Issues Alerts, Floods Disrupt Life

IMD Issues Alerts: Mumbai once again faced heavy rains on Saturday. The continuous rain has disrupted life in the city and the surrounding districts. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri. The department has appealed to the citizens to avoid non-essential travel and stay in safe places.

The rain turned the streets of Mumbai into a lake. Areas like Andheri Subway, Milan Subway, Kurla, Chembur, SCLR Bridge, Gandhi Market, and Kings Circle were flooded. Vehicles passing through here were stuck in water for hours. Photos and videos of half-submerged vehicles continued to go viral on social media.

The unfortunate incident took place at Jankalyan Society in Varsha Nagar, Vikhroli West, where two people died and two were injured after being hit by a landslide. BMC teams immediately got involved in relief and rescue work.

Between 1 am and 4 am on Saturday, Marol fire station in the western suburbs recorded 207 mm of rain, while eastern areas Vikhroli and Ghatkopar also received heavy rains. Colaba recorded 45.2 mm and Santacruz 11.5 mm of rain in the last 24 hours.

The Meteorological Department has predicted that very heavy to extremely heavy rains will continue in Mumbai. The day temperature will be around 29 degrees Celsius, and the minimum night temperature will be around 24 degrees Celsius.

Rain will intensify in Maharashtra

Not only Mumbai, but many districts of Maharashtra are in the grip of continuous rain. The Meteorological Department says that heavy rains may continue in Palghar till August 19. The reason for this is the low-pressure area formed near North Andhra Pradesh in the Bay of Bengal, which is continuously drawing moisture and sending it towards western India.

According to the forecast for August 16, Konkan-Goa will receive moderate to heavy rains, Marathwada will receive thunderstorms, South Madhya Maharashtra will receive light to moderate rains, and some areas of North Maharashtra will receive scattered showers. The incessant rains have further increased the risk of floods and landslides.

Delhi is likely to experience humid heat and light rain

While Mumbai is battling the rains, Delhi is witnessing a series of clouds and showers. The Meteorological Department said that on August 16, the temperature in Delhi will be between 28.5°C to 35.5°C. The average temperature will be recorded at 31.7°C.

Light rain or showers may occur in the afternoon and evening. The humidity level is expected to be 61% and the wind speed will be around 12.6 km/hr. This will definitely provide some relief from the heat, but the humidity will remain.

After sunrise at 5:51 am, the weather was quite pleasant, and people came out of their homes for a walk and exercise. However, experts have warned that people should drink more water during the day and avoid the sun in the afternoon to avoid humidity and heat.

Different pictures of two cities

The weather picture is completely different in two big cities of India. Rain has caused havoc in Mumbai and Maharashtra – water on the roads, traffic jams, and loss of life and property. On the other hand, rain is giving some relief from the heat in Delhi, but humidity and sticky air have troubled people.

Weather experts say that the low-pressure system formed in the Bay of Bengal will continue to show its effect for the next few days. In such a situation, citizens are urged to follow the government alert, take precautions while traveling, and stay in safe places.

This rainy season is once again reminding us how changing and unpredictable the weather of India has become – Mumbai is getting flooded, and Delhi is waiting for relief from the sky.
