Mumbai Weather Update: Yellow Alert Issued, Rains Disrupt Trains, Flights and Daily Life

Mumbai Weather Update: Mumbai woke up to cloudy skies and light to moderate rain on Thursday morning. After continuous heavy rains for the last six days, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the city. This alert is considered less severe than the red and orange alerts issued earlier.

Continuous rain has slowed down the pace of Mumbai. Due to waterlogging, traffic came to a standstill in many areas, and local trains had to be canceled. Although the intensity of rain is expected to decrease, the sky will remain cloudy, and there will be intermittent rain.

Some relief from the drop in temperature

Meanwhile, the weather has also given slight relief to the city dwellers. The temperature in Mumbai is expected to be between 24 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Continuous rain has reduced the humidity, but wet roads and water-filled streets have made people’s daily routine difficult.

The effect in other districts of Maharashtra, too

The effect of rain is not limited to Mumbai only. According to the IMD, most districts of the Konkan region will receive light to moderate rain. At the same time, moderate rainfall is expected at many places in South-Central Maharashtra and some parts of North-Central Maharashtra. Light rain is expected in Marathwada.

Today, a yellow alert has been issued in many districts, including Pune, Thane, Nagpur, Ahmednagar, Satara, Jalna and Solapur. While no warning has been issued in districts like Buldhana, Akola, and Gondia.

Local train and air services are affected

Local train services, which are called the life of Mumbai, have been most affected. Western Railway informed on social media that many local trains had to be canceled on August 21 due to waterlogging. These include Diva-Boisar MEMU, Boisar-Vasai Road MEMU, and Vasai Road-Diva MEMU.

Air services have also been affected. Airlines like Indigo and SpiceJet have warned passengers that flights are likely to be delayed and canceled due to bad weather.

Thousands of people were sent to safer places

Amid incessant rains, the state administration is engaged in relief and rescue operations. So far, about 4,600 people have been shifted to safer places from Nanded, Mumbai suburbs, Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Satara, Pune, and Sangli districts.

Meanwhile, in view of the rising water level, the Maharashtra government has requested Karnataka to increase the amount of water discharge from the Koyna dam from two lakh cusecs to 2.5 lakh cusecs, so that the risk of floods in the villages situated on the banks of the Krishna River can be reduced.

The Chief Minister informed that the situation is under control

On Wednesday evening, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the situation in the state and assured the public that the situation is under control. He said that rescue teams are ready at all times and immediate action will be taken as soon as needed.

Rain will continue

On Thursday, the sky in Mumbai will remain cloudy, and light to moderate rain will continue in the city and suburbs. Though the chances of heavy rains are low, this alert is a reminder for the city to remain extra cautious for the next few days as it continues to get drenched.

Mumbai is currently oscillating between rain and relief—on the one hand, the monsoon brings coolness and relief, while on the other hand, it also poses challenges to the city’s infrastructure and lifestyle.
