What is Aloo-Drumstick Jhol?

In simple language, this is a Bihari style vegetable of potato and drumstick (called Drumstick in English) cooked in a spicy gravy. In Bihar, it is specially made during the winter season when drumsticks are available fresh. Its taste is tangy, slightly sour and very delicious.

How to make this wonderful vegetable

Ingredients:

Potatoes – 2-3 (medium size, chopped)

Drumstick – 4-5 (cut into about 2-inch pieces)

Onion – 2 (finely chopped)

Tomatoes – 2 (finely chopped)

Ginger-garlic paste – 1 tablespoon

Green chilli – 2 (finely chopped)

Mustard oil – 2-3 tablespoons

Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon

Bay leaf – 1

Red chilli powder – 1 teaspoon

Coriander powder – 1 teaspoon

Turmeric powder – 1/2 teaspoon

Garam masala – 1/2 teaspoon

Salt – according to taste

Water – according to need

Coriander leaves – for garnishing

How to make:

First of all, heat mustard oil in a pan.

Add cumin seeds and bay leaves, and temper it.

Now add chopped onions and fry till golden.

Then add ginger-garlic paste and green chillies, and fry for a few seconds.

Add chopped tomatoes and cook till soft. Add red chili, coriander, turmeric, and salt, and mix well. Add some water and fry the spices.

Now add chopped potatoes and drumsticks and mix well.

Add water as per requirement, then cover and cook till potatoes and drumsticks become soft.

When the vegetable is cooked well, add garam masala and mix well.

Garnish with green coriander and serve hot.

Eat it with rice or roti, the fun will double!
