May 1 LPG Price Cut: Relief for Businesses, No Change for Homes

LPG Price Cut from May 1: Good News for Businesses, No Change for Home Cooks

Commercial Gas Cylinder Gets Cheaper, Domestic Prices Remain Unchanged

As May began commercial LPG users across India got a small gift. Oil marketing companies announced a price cut of Rs 15 on commercial gas cylinders from May 1. In Delhi the 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder which cost Rs 1,762 last month is now priced at Rs 1,747. This should ease operational costs for restaurants, caterers and small food businesses who heavily rely on gas.

City Wise Commercial Cylinder Rates Drop Slightly

Prices have been updated across major cities. After the revision a commercial LPG cylinder now costs Rs 1,851 in Kolkata, Rs 1,699 in Mumbai and Rs 1,906 in Chennai. Though the drop may seem small for small and medium enterprises battling inflation and high input costs every rupee counts. This is seen as a step towards stabilizing business expenses in the face of global energy price volatility.

Domestic LPG Users Wait

But the good news doesn’t extend to domestic users. The price of the 14.2 kg LPG cylinder remains unchanged. In Delhi households will still pay Rs 853 per cylinder. Rates remain at Rs 879 in Kolkata, Rs 852.50 in Mumbai and Rs 868.50 in Chennai. The last update in domestic prices was on April 8 when prices were hiked by Rs 50 . A big jump that pinched household budgets.

33 Crore Connections, Subsidy Only for the Needy

India has 33 crore LPG connections. Of these 10.33 crore are under Ujjwala scheme which provides subsidy to economically weaker families. Under the scheme beneficiaries get up to Rs 300 per cylinder. To support this initiative, the government has allocated Rs 11,100 crore in 2025-26 Union Budget for LPG subsidy.

Relief for Businesses, Patience for Households

While May begins with financial relief for businesses, home users will have to wait. With elections around the corner and inflation a big issue, many hope the government will consider a domestic LPG price cut soon. Till then  households will keep an eye on the price meter and their monthly budgets.
