Meet the man who entered AIIMS at age 16, became an IAS at age 22 and then build ed-tech empire

Meet the man who entered AIIMS at age 16, became an IAS at age 22, and now heads an ed-tech empire worth Rs 28,520 crores.

From AIIMS to IAS: The Early Spark of Genius

When compared to Roman Saini, few paths are followed to achieve success. Born to an engineer father and a homemaker mother, he comes from the state of Rajasthan; growing up, he was anything but an ordinary teen. By just age 16, he had already accomplished what thousands dreamed of—cracking India’s arguably most prestigious medical entrance examination, AIIMS. Going by 21, he had already turned MBBS and worked in the National Drug Dependence Treatment Center (NDDTC). Despite the fast pace of his education, this birth was too much for Roman. And registered the desire to create something of a much more meaningful impact.

A Life-Altering Epiphany in Rural India

His medical internship in Haryana happened to be a turning point for him where he was traumatized because of no basic healthcare and educational facilities. This opened his eyes, very soon he began formulating a thought that perhaps he could bring about systemic changes rather than just treat patients. Motivated with this observation, he began preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

IAS at 22: The New Slice of Life

Roman set a record when he made his early appearance as the youngest IAS officer in India at the age of 22. He was posted in Madhya Pradesh and served productive duty there as a district collector. But having achieved probably the most prestigious government occupation, Roman found the position wanting steadily increasing itch
to do more, on a wider scale.

Taking the Entrepreneurial Leap

This changed all that in 2015 when Roman decided to do something that would make all drop their jaws: He resigned from his IAS post and chose a completely new path by being an entrepreneur. A joint effort between Munjal Gaurav and Hemesh Singh led to the founding of Unacademy, a platform to democratize quality education. What was originally going to be a YouTube channel morphed into one of the first impactful ed-tech platforms in India.

Unacademy: A Visionary Transforming Education

The mission was simple but powerfully captivating, make top-tier exam preparation accessible to all regardless of background. Unacademy rapidly turned into a go-to site for all aspirants appearing for exams such as UPSC and has since diversified into competition with other exams. The company amassed top-notch educators, added millions of users and became a symbol of the ed-tech revolution in India.

The Fall into Disrepute All the More Purpose

Reports suggest that by 2025, Unacademy had already fallen into discussions with Allen Career Institute for acquisitions, given the valuation had shrunk to about USD 800 million, a notable dip from its earlier peak. But such is the effect: the same year 2022, sees one Roman earning for himself Rs 88 lakhs, it would’ve been a ear-popping Rs 1.58 crore for co-founder Gaurav Munjal and for Hemesh Singh is Rs 1.19 crore.

The Legacy of Purpose and Passion

It is not only a matter of intelligence or wealth but also pursuit, intention-purpose from medicine to public service and education. From AIIMS to IAS to Unacademy, Roman is showing us that success does not lie in resting but in striving towards finding better methods for society. Life is a lamp for those who undertake to paint the picture of their arterial paths.
