  • Rice, 1/2 cup
  • Moong dal (peeled), 1/4 cup
  • Masoor dal 1/4 cup
  • Tur dal (arhar) 2 tbsp
  • Ghee or oil, 2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp
  • Asafoetida: 1 pinch
  • Chopped onion, 1 medium
  • Chopped green chilies 1-2
  • Ginger-garlic paste 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Salt according to taste.
  • Water, 3 cups
  • Coriander leaves, 1 tbsp (for garnishing)
  • If you want, you can also add chopped carrots, peas, tomatoes, or beans.

Method of preparation Mixed Dal Khichdi:

Mix all the pulses and rice and wash them thoroughly. Soak them in water for 20–30 minutes. Heat ghee/oil in a cooker, and add cumin seeds and asafoetida. Now add onion and fry till light golden. Then add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Add turmeric and salt and fry for 1 minute. Strain the soaked dal-rice and add it to the spices and fry for 1 minute. Now add 3 cups of water and close the cooker. Cook on medium flame till 3 whistles.

After the cooker cools down, open the lid and stir the khichdi well. Serve hot khichdi with ghee, papad, pickle, and curd. A light and healthy option for kids and the elderly.
