New Cricket Rules 2025: From Old Balls to New Drama—ODIs and Tests Set for Major Shake-Up

ICC Brings Big Rule Changes to ODI and Test Cricket: From Old Ball Usage to Concussion Substitutes, Here’s What Will Change from June and July 2025.

ICC Brings a Fresh Spin to International Cricket

New ICC (International Cricket Council) waves of rules, that will change the face of the sport to be played and watched from June-July 2025. These are not inconsequential cosmetic changes, but substantive strategic shifts that might be as much fun to watch as they are to play. Both the white-ball (ODI) and red-ball (Test) formats are going to get these changes, all for fairness, entertainment and more tactical options.

No More Two New Balls All the Way in ODIs

ODIs have traditionally gone with two brand new balls, from both ends and this kept them mostly unused and not conducive to reverse swing. That is about to alter. The 2025 starting July, each ball is permitted for use from one end for 17 overs. After the 35th over, they will be on their own and the choice of ball would rest with the fielding captain From here on out, this change could make reverse swing get more importance (especially in death overs) and re-distribute the wrath between the bowlers as well.

Concussion Substitutes Now More Controlled

Substitute concussion rules are another big change as they get more severe. From the start of the match, teams will be required to nominate five replacements ahead of time (one wicketkeeper, one batsman, one spinner, one fast bowler one allrounder). Injury in the field to a fielder—any fielder for head impact—only allows like for like substitutions will be made. To combat the previous abuses that would get a bowler changed for a batsman, therefore unduly manipulating the game.
