Artillery Shelling On International Border and LoC
At the same time Pakistan army personnel intensified artillery shelling on the International Border (IB) in the Akhnoor, Rajouri, and RS Pura sectors. There were breaches also on the Line of Control (LoC) in the Palanwalla sector. As artillery shells rained down Indian security personnel were placed on red alert, and the Border Security Force (BSF) was ordered to retaliate fiercely.
Drone Threats Extend to Rajouri and Samba
Sighting of drones were also reported from Samba and Rajouri districts further creating fear of aerial attacks. Air raid alarms were experienced in Samba, adding to the people’s fears further. Even though a ceasefire had been announced these have once again further escalated the fear of a full blown war.
Political Reactions and Escalating Concern
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was outraged on Twitter, “What the hell just happened to the ceasefire? Explosions heard all over Srinagar!!!”
His sentiment captured the feeling of most people in the area who had been looking forward to a lull in violence. This quick Indian military retaliation indicates that this violation will only serve to be an excuse for further ratcheting up the tension bringing the shaky ceasefire to the attention of the rest of the world.
The Future of the Ceasefire Agreement
As ceasefire violations jeopardize the fragile peace the world anxiously waits to see how India and Pakistan react to this development. Diplomatic talks while initiated now face additional challenges in maintaining a ceasefire that increasingly seems impossible.
