Want to get a PAN card made for your child? Here’s the easiest way parents can apply online or offline for their kids’ PAN cards. Full process explained step-by-step.

Why PAN Card for Children Is Suddenly So Important

New Delhi: It wasn’t long ago that PAN cards were considered a grown-ups’ thing – filing taxes, salary slips and what not. But now? Even tiny toddlers may need one! Whether it’s opening a bank account, depositing money in a child savings scheme or applying for a government yojana, these days PAN card has become the mandatory document even for minors too.

Government Schemes Require PAN for Minors

Many welfare schemes have been implemented for children by the Centre, and a PAN card is usually like that ticket of eligibility. Be it an account under Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, a child mutual fund or an education bond – PAN is the gatekeeper. Banks now also require it when opening a child’s savings account. But there is good news: The process isn’t scary. It’s parent-friendly!

Parent or Guardian Must Apply – Kids Can’t Do It Themselves

Children below the age of 18 years are not eligible to apply for PAN cards by themselves, says CA Sanjoli Maheshwari. The one who applies should be the parent or legal guardian. And if your child is in India or abroad, you can either apply online or offline. The online version is faster and a bit slicker — no stress, no sweating.

Here’s the Easy Online Method to Get Your Child’s PAN

Head straight to the NSDL website. Click on ‘New Application’. Select ‘New PAN – Indian Citizen (Form 49A)’ and choose ‘Individual’. Then enter your child’s details, your own address and contact info, and upload the necessary documents – including your child’s photo and proof of identity. Once you pay the small fee, you’ll receive an acknowledgement number.

Now, if you opt for physical document verification, don’t forget to post the required papers to NSDL’s address within 15 days – or your application might get cancelled.
