A Scary Warning from Japan’s “Baba Vanga”
There’s panic in the air as a chilling prediction spreads across Japan and nearby countries. A well-known Japanese manga artist, Rio Tatsuki, has warned that a huge tsunami might hit Japan on July 5, 2025. People are taking her words seriously because she’s been right before. So right, in fact, that many call her “Japan’s Baba Vanga” after the famous blind mystic from Bulgaria.
Tatsuki, creator of manga comic The Future I Saw, penned a disaster she “dreamt” up. A powerful tsunami, she relates, will hit between Japan and the Philippines, even worse than the fatal 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. She says the waves could be three times bigger.
Mass Cancellations as Fear Spreads
After her old manga was republished recently, fear started spreading fast. Tourists started backing out of their travel plans, and airlines didn’t wait around either. Hong Kong Airlines has cancelled flights in July and August to Kagoshima and Kumamoto. They said the cancellations were due to rising fears of earthquakes and tsunamis just like the ones Rio Tatsuki predicted.
Travel agents are shocked. Around 80% of flights from Hong Kong to Japan in June and July have been cancelled. A Bloomberg report revealed that flight bookings have dropped by 50% compared to last year. Even big airliners using Boeing planes saw up to 20% more cancellations.
An 80% fill was anticipated by one local carrier, Greater Bay Airlines. But only 40% did. Their Japan head, Hiroki Ito, said such low demand in peak season is “really unusual.”
Why People Are Taking It Seriously
Tatsuki isn’t just some internet fortune teller. She has also correctly predicted numerous incidents previously, such as the 2011 tsunami, the murder of Princess Diana, and even the COVID-19 pandemic. They seem to happen in her dreams, she says, and are interpreted through her manga.
Her past accuracy has made people uneasy. Even if it’s just a dream, people aren’t taking chances. “Better safe than sorry,” one traveller said while cancelling her Japan vacation.

Truth or Just Fear?
We don’t know if this tsunami will really happen. But one thing is certain: Tatsuki’s words already have practical effects. Airlines lose money. Tourists panic. And they all hold their collective breath until July 5—hoped it’s just an ordinary day.
Until then, they wait, they watch, they speculate. Is it a novel? Or a threat we shall be regretful to have overlooked?
