Nationwide and State Specific Closures Between May 7 and May 12 Could Disrupt Banking Plans

If you’re planning a bank visit this week it may be time to double check your calendar. Banks would remain closed for up to five days from May 7 to May 12 in several Indian cities some on account of regional observances and others for national occasions. Hopefully customers could become significant inconveniences across India in case they do not plan ahead.

May 7: Panchayat Elections in Assam to Shut Banks

The week begins with a regional holiday on Tuesday, May 7 as Assam gears up for local Panchayat elections. Cities such as Guwahati will witness a complete shutdown of banks for the day. While this would not hold anywhere else people in Assam will have to arrange for any banking activity in person.

May 9: In West Bengal, Tagore Jayanti Will Be Observed

Just two days later Thursday May 9, will see the disruption of banking services in West Bengal including in Kolkata. It is to commemorate the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore that banks will close down completely. Branches in other states will function normally.

May 10 and 11: Weekend Brings Regular Closures

Following the normal weekend routine May 10 is the second Saturday of the month when the banks remain closed all over the country as per normal practice. It is followed by May 11 which is a regular Sunday bank holiday all over the country.

May 12: Buddha Purnima Brings Major Shutdowns in Banks

The banking week ends with a holiday on Monday May 12 for Buddha Purnima. The Purnima will witness bank closures in the major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bhopal, Kolkata, Lucknow amongst others. Customers in these regions should expect total branch inaccessibility.

Digital Services Left Rolling, But Safe with Your Planning

Banks will not be able to provide services that require physical presence such as KYC, cash deposits and passbook updates for five days. Though banks leave their ATM, mobile banking and online fund transfers operational. It is best therefore, not to postpone any of these urgent matters until after the break.
