Thailand Shaken Twice at Night—Is This a Sign of the Big One?

Thailand was shaken just past midnight on Friday with a one-two punch of earthquakes that terrified local villages in Mae Hong Son. These two tremors were of minor strength but they had just enough might to rattle the residents awake and set a good number of them onto the streets, wondering what to expect moving forward.
Magnitude-3.8 First, Then a 2.4 Aftershock
At 10:27 p.m the 3.8 magnitude quake rattled the Wiang Nuea area with an epicenter located just about 4 kilometers deep according to the Thai Meteorological Department. Only six minutes later would there be a second quake which measured 2.4 on the Richter scale and struck in the Mae Hi subdistrict of Pai at a shallow depth of just one kilometer. This weak quake was relatively close to the surface, making its effects felt quite considerably, and exacerbating the local fears.
Nothing Serious, but Fear Was On
While injuries to any person or loss of properties were never reported, fear was ever-present. Wiang Nuea and Pai residents describe how the ground shook beneath them, inciting confusion and panic. More were seen rushing out of their homes to gather in open areas, bracing for an even stronger quake. Some say the shaking felt just like a brief moment, while many others made their way out of their homes as nothing else mattered to them.
Authorities Remain on High Alert and Urge Public to Stay Calm
Emergency services and governmental officials quickly reported precautionary advisories urging citizens to be alert and cooperate with safety guidelines. The Thai Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department has now urged people to stay calm as they try not to spread any unconfirmed information sticking to only official updates. Meanwhile whilst currently under control authorities still keep a close tap on the seismic activity in the area.
One Creepy Reminder of Last Month’s Quake in Bangkok
That incident took place only weeks after the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that caused devastation in the capital, Bangkok. That earthquake’s shock was very hard, in fact, very palpable, that a whole building of 30 stories came down. In that moment, a small version of a tsunami was generated from the rooftop swimming pool toward the occupants caught up in miseries.
Thursday night’s tremors made no apparent case for destruction, but they were a staunch reminder that the specter of seismic menace hangs over the area. With that the mood in Mae Hong Son may well improve sooner than later. However the anguish of those few minutes will forever hover over people’s minds.
