Ingredients to make tomato onion chutney :

  • Tomatoes—3 medium (chopped)
  • Onion—1 large (chopped)
  • Garlic—4-5 cloves
  • Dry red chili—2-3 (according to taste)
  • Mustard seeds—1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves—6-8 leaves (optional)
  • Asafoetida—1 pinch
  • Turmeric—1/4 tsp
  • Salt—according to taste
  • Oil—1 tbsp
  • Tamarind paste—1 tsp (optional, to increase spiciness)

Method to make tomato-onion chutney :

Heat 1/2 tbsp oil in a pan. Add onion, garlic, and dried red chili. Fry the onion till it turns golden, then add tomatoes. Add turmeric and salt and cook till the tomatoes melt. If you want, add tamarind paste at this time. Let it cool and then grind it coarsely in a mixer.

Take a small tadka pan and heat the remaining oil in it. Add mustard seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves, and crackle them. Add this tadka to the prepared chutney. This chutney tastes very delicious with idli, dosa, rice, paratha, or pakora. You can also store it in the fridge for 3-4 days. Enjoy the taste. To enhance the flavor, you can add roasted cumin powder to it. If you like it spicy, you can also add roasted green chilies. For South Indian style, you can also add a little coconut.
