Smooth Train Journeys Begin With Packing For The Right One

Traveling by Train? Know These Baggage Limits First

As April marks the official season of travel, millions are reporting to the Indian Railways for work, vacations, and family visits. Booking up the needed tickets is however just one preparation before considering new rules about luggage. Otherwise, you might face some hidden charges or denial at the boarding gate. Just as essential is being aware of what you can take with you, in the same way you captured your train timetable.

Indications of Indian Railways for Updating Luggage Rules across All Classes

Indian Railways, the busiest of all railway networks, has strict luggage rules according to the class of travel to ensure space, safety, and comfort for all passengers. For example, if traveling in AC First Class, the maximum weight of luggage permitted is 70 kg. AC 2-Tier passengers can carry up to 50 kg, while First Class passengers are limited to 50 kg. AC 3-Tier, Sleeper Class, and Chair Car are limited to 40 kg. Passengers who travel in the Second Class will not have more than 35 kg on them.

Extra Luggage Might Cost More than Expected

Cross the permitted weight and expect to incur further fees. Excess luggage charges are nominal if one is within the allowable limit but for way more than the allowed free limit. Charges could run as high as 1.5 times the normal rate. It is a cost that can be easily avoided by keeping an advance schedule. For large amounts of luggage, it is advisable to book items beforehand at the railway parcel office rather than waiting until the last minute.

Not Everything Allowed

You can’t pack everything in your luggage allowance. Scooters, bicycles or other large things must be booked as cargo and carrying dangerous goods such as gas cylinders, explosives or acids is strictly forbidden because those aboard, as well as children between the ages of 5 and 12 get only half the allowance based on their travel class with a maximum limit of 50 kg.

A Bit of Awareness Goes A Long Way

Traveling by train is truly meant to enjoy proportions of beauty views and amazing experiences but not with surprises by penalties. So that the next time you pack for that carousel ride, weigh your bags and adhere to the guidelines as you travel worry-free.
