No Need to Worry: Government Dismisses UPI Fee Rumours
You may have heard someone say that shopkeepers are now going to charge extra if you pay through UPI. Relax, it’s nothing more than a rumor. These kinds of messages are flying all over WhatsApp and social media lately, and honestly, they’ve confused a lot of people. But finally, the Finance Ministry stepped in and said, “Stop believing this rumours.” In a post shared on X (you probably still call it Twitter), the ministry made it crystal clear: there are no extra charges on UPI. Not now, not coming soon.
Clear Statement from the Finance Ministry
The government didn’t beat around the bush. They called it baseless panic. Finance Ministry declared that they are not going to impose fees for UPI transactions. They said some people are just trying to stir up unnecessary drama. And with digital payments growing so fast, the government actually wants to push more people toward UPI, not scare them off.
UPI Outpaces Visa in Transactions
Here’s something exciting: UPI isn’t just growing, it’s smashing records. On June 1st, 2025, around 64.4 crore transactions were made through UPI. That number jumped past 65 crore just the very next day! It even beat Visa. That’s how much Indians now rely on UPI, it’s fast, it’s easy, and it works like a charm.
Global Recognition of India’s UPI System
To celebrate 11 years of the Modi government, a special booklet was released that put a spotlight on India’s digital achievements. At the heart of it was UPI, which has now made its way to other countries. When our local payment system expands globally, the world pays attention.
In March 2025, UPI recorded an impressive 1,830.151 crore transactions, totaling about ₹24.77 lakh crore. This success is more than just a statistic. It shows how deeply UPI has become a part of daily life. From buying groceries to paying for quick tea stall payments, it’s everywhere.
What’s really interesting is that nearly 50% of these transactions were tiny payments. Small vendors, local chemists, fruit sellers, they all use UPI now. It’s simple, quick, and trusted. This is not technology, this is talking about actual human beings utilizing it on the ground.
The second major achievement is that it is from how the government utilized digital tools such as UPI and DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) in order to provide clean and transparent governance. By directly transferring funds into people’s bank accounts, they eliminate intermediaries and reduce the chances of fraud. This advancement has a significant impact on individuals.
So, the next time you hear rumors about UPI fees, dismiss them with confidence and keep scanning those QR codes without hesitation.
