According to the new regulation, your UPI ID will be deactivated if it has been associated with a mobile number that has been inactive for a long time. A number is said to be inactive for 90 days if it is not used in Voice calls, SMS, or Data. After this, telecom operators will mark the number as inactive and will be willing to assign this number to another customer. With this, the person would unassign his UPI ID, and he would not be in a position to use UPI services.
Why Is This Rule Being Implemented?
The primary intent of this rule is to increase the safety as well as the transparency of the digital payment. Inactive numbers are often recycled by telecom service providers for possible fraud crimes.
The new subscriber using your number could wrongly gain entry into UPI services and commit theft thereafter from your account. By applying this rule, the NPCI intends to minimize these kinds of risks and safeguard users from any fraud in their respective digital engagements.
What Makes A Mobile Number Inactive?
Usually, a telecom operator will declare a mobile number as inactive after 90 days of non-use. This implies that if you do not make any calls, send an SMS, or use data for a specified period, your number shall be considered inactive.
An inactive number would then be returned to circulation for a new user to use. This may cause chaos for UPI services if your number is linked to your account.
Important Dates and Timeline
- April 1, 2025: From this date onward, UPI IDs linked to inactive mobile numbers shall be deactivated.
- Weekly deactivation: After April 1, the banks will deactivate a UPI ID with respect to a number once it is deemed inactive on a weekly basis.
