India’s electric scooter market is changing rapidly. While Ola Electric once dominated this segment, now brands like TVS and Bajaj have strengthened their hold in this market. In such a situation, now Japanese giant Yamaha is also preparing to enter India with its first electric scooter.

Yamaha’s new electric scooter plan

Yamaha is not currently selling electric scooters in India, but the company has started working rapidly in this direction. According to the information, Yamaha is working on a new electric scooter codenamed RY01. This scooter is being prepared on the basis of the River Indie model and will be introduced as a global product. The launch is expected by the end of 2025.

Yamaha has decided to make this scooter in collaboration with Indian startup River. River will take responsibility for technical aspects such as design, research and development, motor, battery and manufacturing in this project. Yamaha will own the entire project, while River will handle its manufacturing and technical development.

  • Launch expected: By the end of 2025

What can be special in the scooter?

This scooter of Yamaha is being prepared on the platform of River Indie, so the same type of battery and motor can be found in it. However, Yamaha will give it a different identity with its style and sporty look.

River Indie has a 4 kWh battery which according to IDC gives a range of about 161 km on a single charge. It has a PMSM motor with a power of 6.7 kW (about 9 bhp). The same system is likely to be used in Yamaha’s scooter, but some changes may also be made to it.

This whole plan is part of the $40 million investment made by Yamaha in River, which was made during Series B funding in 2024.

Yamaha was away from the EV market of India till now, but now it is actively entering this field.

By joining hands with innovative Indian startups like River, Yamaha will get the benefit of cost reduction and local production.

This move will enable Indian users to get a reliable, stylish and performance-oriented electric scooter.

The partnership with River and the planning done keeping Indian users in mind clearly shows that the company is preparing for the long race in this segment.
