The Dark Side of Fame: Apoorva’s Social Media Nightmare

The face of social media Apoorva Mukhija, popularly known by millions as the.rebel.kid, is facing a storm of unsettling online abuse right now after it recorded over 3.4 million followers on Instagram. Today, Apoorva enjoys her fame as an internet sensation, but dirty fame turned when anonymous accounts threatened her in terms of rape and death after she guest-starred on comedian Samay Raina’s controversial show India Got Talent.

In yet another incident to crack some outrage Apoorva shared her screenshots of the horrendous messages she received. The internet is most often hardly a double edged sword and her post reveals just how cruel and dangerous it could turn for the women in the eyes of the public. Not only were the messages very offensive but they were downright vile, violent and criminal. After cleaning up all the old stuff she has currently left it with just three posts on her Instagram profile the last one revealing the abuse that she is going through.

The National Commission for Women Steps In

The National Commission for Women (NCW) maintained silence on the issue. Immediately after taking cognizance of the case the commission issued a strong condemnation statement against threats. It identified online abuse as “heinous” and declared there should not be any woman who feels unsafe in the network or otherwise. The NCW used strong words urging law enforcement agencies to identify the perpetrators and take prompt action. Such threats give dangerous precedents which must not be tolerated.

NCW Demands Prompt Legal Action and Safety 

In a formal letter to Director General of Police, Maharashtra, Sanjay Kumar Verma, NCW demanded that the matter be investigated thoroughly and a detailed report be forwarded within three days. They also called for Apoorva to be given any necessary protection and psychological support making it clear that refusal to take notice of such threats could lead to severe ramifications in the future.

This case has again brought online safety and responsibility into the limelight. The NCW made it clear that not just police but also the social network and society at large will have to shoulder the responsibility of having a safe digital space. As online abuse goes rampant, voices like that of Apoorva are important to holding abusers accountable and reclaiming digital space for women from around the world.
