The Racket’s tale
What is Lawn Tennis?
Tennis, also known as lawn tennis, is a sport that is played in the form of singles or doubles. Played by people of all ages in society, tennis is a competitive yet enjoyable sport that is played all over the world . The sport of lawn tennis is played on the basis of a point system, which means that the person with more points in the end is declared as the winner of the entire match.
Origins of Lawn Tennis:
Lawn tennis is said to have originated in France during the Middle Ages. Previously, the sport in France was called jeu de paume, which is a French word that translates to game of hands. This game that was played in France back then is said to be the foundation for the sport of Lawn Tennis altogether.
Talking about modern tennis, it seems that the lawn tennis we know and love eventually originated in Birmingham, England, in the 19th century, where it was first given the name of lawn tennis. The game is very similar to other sports like croquet and even the original racket sport called Tennis. The set of rules we know and love for the sport of modern tennis or lawn tennis were given way back in 1890 and there have been very little changes to those rules since then.
Early History:
The accounts about tennis date back to France around the 12th century when’ jeu de paume’ was played by many people all around the nation of France. It is said that the first notable player of this sport was Louis X, who had immense love for this sport. By the 13th century, the popularity of tennis in France reached an all-time high, and many so-called tennis courts were set up in Paris
The word tenez, which is a French word that means receive or take is seen as the reason for the name of the sport being tennis. By the 13th century, the famous sport of tennis had also reached England and its neighbouring countries and was widely being played in indoor courts and very few outdoor courts all over France and England. Many English rulers, including Henry VIII, was an enthusiast of the sport that we now call old tennis.
Modern Tennis:
By the 18th and 19th centuries, the sport of tennis had been mostly replaced by a new sport that comprised more modern and well-laid rules. This sport came to be known as lawn tennis. There was a sudden boom in the popularity of lawn tennis as more outdoor courts, which were more lush and greener, appeared in various parts of the world as the lawn mower was invented during that period.
The sport reached the USA when the Leamington Tennis Club was set up in the US in 1873. This Club eventually led to the expansion of tennis all over the US and the world.
USA’s contribution to the sport:
Despite the sport’s late arrival to the country, the US played a major part in the history of Modern Tennis or Lawn Tennis. On 21 May 1881, the oldest tennis organisation in the world, the United States National Lawn Tennis Association, was formed. The main purpose of this association was to make the sport more liberal.
The US Open (previously known as US National Men’s Single Championship) was held for the first time in 1881, which was a historic milestone for the sport that we all love.
Other famous tournaments that were introduced back then include the Wimbledon, US Open, French Open, and Australian Open, and they are still prominent today. These tournaments together form the Grand Slam.
Players:
In the entire life cycle of tennis there have been many players who have been given the title of one of the greatest players to ever grace the sport of Lawn Tennis. This includes early greats like the Renshaw Brothers and many others who dominated the sport during the 1880s. Whereas during the 1950s many other players like Maureen Conolly made a name for themselves in this sport.
As of the today many analysts consider that the Greatest of All time spot for lawn tennis is shared by three players- Rafael Nadal, Djokovic and Roger Federer, all three of which have won several titles while playing the prestigious sport.
The sport has also seen various women players who have been really famous. These include Serena Williams, Steffi Graf, Chris Evert and many more.
Summary:
In the end, it can be said that Lawn tennis or tennis is one of the few sports which have had a really rich history and are being played still to this date. It seems that the love for this sport will never end as more and more people are starting to develop a liking for it. Whether it be for recreation or its competitivenes, the sport of Lawn tennis is and will always remain one of the most prominent sports in the world.
