UPI Crash Leaves India Cashless: GPay, Paytm Affected

Nationwide UPI Outage Brings Digital Payments to a Standstill Across India

Millions Left Stranded as Paytm, PhonePe, GPay Suffer Simultaneous Disruptions

India has received an unexpected blow to its digital economy as the Unified Payments Interface is reportedly down nationwide on Saturday April 12. Preventing users from completing transactions over major platforms such as Paytm, Google Pay and PhonePe.

This destroyed the digital fabric of the nation from bustling supermarkets in Mumbai to local kirana shops in Kolkata. By midday Downdetector would record over 1,200 disruption complaints with angry users taking to social media to vent their frustrations.

Life has Changed with the Dark UPI

UPI thus has become a way of life for most Indians from buying daily groceries, paying cab fare or splitting bills after a family dinner meeting. But that was not so convenient on Saturday.

I couldn’t pay my restaurant bill. None of the apps worked,” said a user on social media site X, formerly Twitter. Another added: “Digital India on pause today. No GPay, no Paytm-nothing.”

Cashless Living Hits the Wall

Of course as the full fledged shift to cashless payment systems came, the Indian citizens became so dependent on UPI that any failure in the payments system is felt immediately and widely. India now finds itself in an uncomfortable deadlock.

Adding to the Confusion with Silence

While confusion flourished online there was no official statement from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) which runs the UPI infrastructure. Meanwhile users continue to rumour about whether it was a technical glitch, server overload or something worse.

What Next for UPI Users?

Until services are brought back completely experts recommend keeping alternative means of payment ready. Some banks apps may still manage to process transfers while online or offline transactions may be less convenient with cards they still work.
